Presenters wanted for Can We Talk? youth mental wellness conference

The Alberta Teachers' Association and the Society for Safe & Caring Schools & Communities are seeking presenters for a one-day conference on youth and mental wellness.

Can We Talk?—Communities and Teachers Supporting Mental Wellness will take place May 7, 2012 at the Lethbridge Lodge. Presenters are needed to deliver conference breakout sessions.

If your organization is interested in this volunteer opportunity to share its knowledge and experience in the area of youth and mental wellness, please complete and submit a presenter proposal form.

2011 Conference of the Committee on the Well-Being of Children and Youth

 

May 9, 2011, Capri Centre, Red Deer, Alberta

 

Can We Talk? Communities and Teachers Supporting Mental Wellness is sponsored by the Alberta Teachers' Association under the auspices of the Committee on the Well-Being of Children and Youth, and in conjunction with the Joint Stakeholders on Children and Poverty.

This one-day conference will focus on issues related to youth and mental wellness and feature:

  • keynote addresses by David Cory, Dr. Phil McRae and Mat Halton
  • informative breakout sessions on a range of topics by local experts
  • World Café event
  • complimentary hot breakfast and lunch buffets
  • valuable networking opportunities

There is no fee to attend this conference, but registration is required.

Hats On for Mental Health

On May 4, 2011, Albertans are invited to wear a hat to raise awareness of the importance of good mental health. Participating schools will relax their hat rules and encourage students and teachers to build understanding by wearing hats to school. Students will also participate in a coordinated lesson on understanding mental health and the importance of removing the stigma associated with mental illnesses.

Teachers are encouraged to use these short lesson plans in their classes on May 4th.

Alberta Teachers' Association wins National Mental Health Award

The Alberta Teachers' Association was presented with the 2010 Mental Health in the Workplace Award by the Canadian Mental Health Association. The award was given to the ATA for its work raising awareness of mental health issues amongst students as part of the Healthy Minds, Bright Futures program. The presentation was held on October 22, 2010 at the CMHA National Annual General Meeting in London, Ontario.

For the past nine years, in lieu of sending out Christmas cards, the Association has been making annual Christmas donations. With teachers all across the province raising awareness about mental health issues, what better cause to support than the Alberta division of the Canadian Mental Health Association!

On behalf of Alberta's teachers, President Henderson was pleased to present a cheque for $1000 to Tom Shand, executive director of the Alberta division of the Canadian Mental Health Association. Shand thanked the Association for all the work that teachers do to help reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues

Sturgeon Teachers Unite to Raise Funds for Mental Health

Here is an excerpt from an article by Stephen Dafoe that appeared in the Morinville News about the Don’t Dodge the Truth on Mental Health fundraiser put on by Sturgeon Teachers Local No 27.

With the books put away and the students gone for the weekend, local teachers gathered in the Sturgeon Composite High School gymnasium Friday night for a little bit of dodge ball and a great deal of fun.The tournament pitted teachers from various schools in the Sturgeon School Division against one another, each school donning a different themed costume. But the costumes, while jovial on the surface, were put on to raise funds and awareness for a serious issue.

With the tag line Don't Dodge the Truth on Mental Health, area teachers sought to raise funds and awareness of mental health issues during the evening's outing.

Calgary Public Teachers’ Local 38 Donates $10,588 to Mental Health

The Calgary Public Teachers’ Local 38 of the Alberta Teachers’ Association hosted a Games Night at Schänk’s South on Saturday, October 2, 2010 to coincide with World Teachers’ Day.  The purpose of the event was to raise money for the Canadian Mental Health Association-Calgary Region and to engage the public in the great work that teachers do beyond the four walls of the classroom.

Edmonton Public Teachers raise $9,000 to support children's mental health

The Edmonton Public Teachers Local No 37 held their annual charity golf tournament on Friday, August 27, 2010 at the Raven Crest Golf and Country Club. With the assistance of their sponsors and participants, approximately $9,000 was raised in support of the Canadian Mental Health Association - Edmonton Region.

 

The Alberta Teachers' Association also supported the CMHA - Edmonton region by sending a team to the Mental Health Golf Classic held on Thursday September 2, 2010 at the Highlands Golf and Country Club.
